Thesis (Ph.D.)--International Institute for Population Sciences University, 2019.

This thesis contains an overall scenario of Indian marriages based on data from India Human Development Survey (IHDS-II) 2011-12. This also contains the conjugal, familial and social lives of inter-caste couples based on primary data from 200 inter-caste couples. The views of unmarried youth and inter-caste couples about inter-caste marriages are also portrayed in this thesis. Analysis of IHDS data demonstrates that arranged, caste endogamous marriages continue to be the major characteristics of Indian marriages. In India, marriage is overwhelmingly shaped by familial and societal factors as families play an important and often dominant role in the marriage process. Primary data reveals the conjugal, familial and social life of inter-caste couples in Nagpur district of Maharashtra. A lover-to-spouse paradigm is dominant in inter-caste marriages, as 97 percent of the surveyed inter-caste marriages were love based. Most of the inter-caste marriages were contracted against the wish of parents and family. The disapproval of those parents was attributed mainly to caste difference, cultural differences, and the lower-caste status of the spouse of their son/daughter. Four out of every 10 husbands and 7 out of 10 wives experienced social and psychological pressure to change their decision to marry outside their caste. Of every 10 inter-caste couples, six experienced difficulties in having their marriages solemnized. Despite marrying legally, three in every 10 couples could not start marital life immediately after marriage. Of the husbands, 39% and 66% of the wives had been boycotted by their families. The gender aspect is visible as more wives were boycotted by their families than the husbands. Despite the difficulties, most of the couples were happy in their marital lives. Most of them had complete confidence that they were loved by their spouses. The disapproval was seen to be directly related to the social distance between the castes of the spouse. Although it is a challenging situation for the couple, it is more so for the wives. Most of the unmarried youth were vocal in their opposition to caste, but were not ready to accept the idea of inter-caste marriage because they felt that it would cause more problems than resolving any.
