Two-thirds of the world's poorest households live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Tackling poverty, hunger, and malnutrition requires drastically increasing the production and commercialization of smallholder agricultural producers in developing countries. Although productivity growth in agriculture has the largest impact of any sector on reducing poverty, rural markets in developing countries are often rife with constraints that limit the success of smallholders. Agricultural cooperatives may contribute to rural development and poverty alleviation in certain contexts. But rather than eliminating market constraints, collective action shifts these burdens from individual producers to the cooperative as a whole. The effectiveness of cooperatives in raising smallholder market engagement will depend on how well cooperatives manage the challenge of internally coordinating sales among a large group of individual market actors. Evidence suggests that some farmer organizations are able to successfully overcome this challenge, while others largely fail in this effort. This dissertation investigates the factors that influence the success and failure of agricultural cooperatives and explores how researchers, policymakers and NGOs can promote thriving producer organizations. I answer this question by i) investigating the inclusive-performance tradeoff in agricultural marketing cooperatives, ii) analyzing the impact of participating in cooperative sales events as opposed to side-selling, and iii) assessing the feasibility of a smartphone application that is designed to improve cooperative performance by relaxing the constraints associated with arranging sales. My population of interest are smallholder goat producers in rural Nepal, all of whom are women and members of agricultural cooperatives.I find that agricultural marketing cooperatives provide significant benefits to their members, but struggle to include the vast majority of producers in collective activities. My results suggest that cooperatives are unable to provide sufficient opportunities for all members to participate in their organization's activities. This may be due to the challenge of efficiently communicating with hundreds of individual producers and maintaining accurate inventory records. However, the introduction of a smartphone application designed to improve information-sharing and coordination suffered from low uptake and technical limitations.
