Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), one of the most celebrated composers in Japan, created a peculiar musical language by integrating the disparate musical traditions of East and West. Takemitsu was also a humanitarian who strove to bring the unique characteristics of the different traditions together and create a universal culture. Takemitsu's late solo piano pieces, Rain Tree Sketch (1982) and Rain Tree Sketch II (1992) are based on a description of a rain tree in Kenzaburo Oe's novel "Clever Rain Tree" (1980). Kenzaburo Oe (b. 1935), a Nobel Prize winner in literature in 1994, was a very close friend of Takemitsu from the early stage of their careers. This document uncovers Toru Takemitsu's persona through his own words, and investigates Takemitsu's relationship with Kenzaburo Oe in the Rain Tree series. Chapter I discusses the background and style periods of Toru Takemitsu focused on the main events which influenced him as a composer. Takemitsu's philosophical ideas are the subject of Chapter II which relates to his compositional process and his goal as an artist. Chapter III is the investigation of the "Rain Tree" series of both Takemitsu and Oe. Chapter IV is an analysis of Rain Tree Sketch and Rain Tree Sketch II from the performer's perspective. Many of the English translations in the document are by the author taken from Takemitsu's own literary collections and interviews from other sources. This document will serve as a guidebook for pianists and other musicians in making the intellectual and interpretive decisions necessary to perform Takemitsu's music.
