This is a comparative literature thesis that examines modern young adult literature adaptations of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur. I am comparing four specific adaptations from the last five years: Tracy Deonn's Legendborn, A.R. Capetta and Cori McCarthy's Once & Future, Thomas Wheeler's Cursed, and Kiersten White's The Guinevere Deception. These recent novels adapt Malory's Morte to criticize the patriarchal, white, tradition of the Arthurian narrative. These adaptations attempt to recast the chivalric values of honor, loyalty, and power in a modern context to show that these values are not inherent nor exclusive to white men. Additionally, the novels reveal how the Arthurian narratives problematically rely on female trauma and divine prophecy. Focusing on the characters Arthur, Merlin, and Guinevere, I argue that the novels attempt to redeem misogynistic tropes and prophetic identity systems to translate Arthurian narrative into the modern day.
