In this dissertation, I develop a framework for aesthetic and political analysis that is based upon the writings of Georges Canguilhem and his idea of Practical Medical Reason. I argue that Canguilhem's work makes the study of illness axiomatic for humanistic inquiry at large. As Canguilhem writes, medical practice deals with the relationship between "knowledge andpropulsive non-knowledge," between experimental knowledge and the demands of illness. It is this paradigm of Medical thought, I argue, that can explain how works of cinema and literature articulate demands upon the normal. I incorporate Canguilhem's medical writings into political and aesthetic thought, constructing a unique approach to both formal analysis and social analysis of art. In the humanities, even in literary study, the purely linguistic modes of analyzing normativity are giving way to more material analyses, and my work proposes new relationships between literature and its material life. My project sits at the intersection of the disciplines of queer theory, political philosophy, literary study, and the medical humanities, enmeshing these discourses in order to craft new concepts for the humanities.
