The boys do not cry statements and other teaching modalities of emotional blandness have negatively impacted the African American male population. Resulting in them having a lower emotional developmental foundation in adulthood (Meshkat & Nejati, 2017). The problem investigated for this study was the impact societal forced gender roles have on the emotional development of African American men. In using the phenomenological approach, 35 participants contributed to an interview process, who self-identified as meeting the criteria for the interest of the study. This study conducted semi-structured interviews to gather lived experience information on how forced gender roles impacted their childhood development. This study found that there is a significant correlation between gender roles and emotional maturity observed through self-identified struggles with emotional development. This study also found that there is an overall lack of research surrounding this topic and additional research is needed to continue this narrative. In conclusion, this study serves as a foundation to greater research on how to improve the emotional developmental outcomes for African American males during their childhood. Professionals can utilize findings of the study to further develop processes to teach emotional development in African American children and assist adult males with their journey towards emotional maturity.
