The present study seeks to partially replicate Dale Brown's (2010) research on vocabulary activity in textbooks, What aspects of vocabulary knowledge do textbooks give attention to? which examines the nine aspects of knowing of a word (Nation 2013) but with a particular focus on collocation research. Materials evaluation and descriptive analysis were the main tools of the methodology. Nine ESL/EFL textbooks - both four-skill and reading and writing - were surveyed and 1180 vocabulary activities were examined. Similarities akin to Brown's findings were found as well as significant decreases in the appearances of vocabulary exercises for several of the nine aspects, especially with collocations. Brown's study and the present one showed some differences and similarities and suggested possible wider implications for collocation exercises in textbooks. Questions on the responsibility of textbook publisher and writer and the need for including more vocabulary and collocation activities were also raised. Finally, the debate over whether an English language learner (ELL) should learn how to competently produce collocations as an essential part of English language teaching for the classroom was also discussed.
