Permanence is a material attribute desired by humans. Permanence cannot be found in nature. Sun, wind, water, and biology ensure that all things natural die or change with time. The continuous process of erosion is a struggle for society's goal for permanence. We strive for permanence to preserve objects and information; this ensures information is passed on through time.Preserving a person, an ideology, or an event into a memorial is problematic as society changes over time. Society will shift in unpredictable ways. Eventually, the memorials are outdated and no longer represent the whole accurately. These changes in representation will demand alterations to memorials to realign their meaning. The transformation depends on the memorial and its current historic projection. Minor memorials may have plaques added to correct misleading information while the more significant ones are vandalized or even decapitate. The reaction by the citizens controls the transformation, a greater misrepresentation leads to a greater change. As people are no longer represented in their memorials, they begin to question their effectiveness and ask for change. Architects and artists look to ephemeral memorials and temporary structures which support public input. Once feedback has been received, the temporary memorials are removed, and new ones take their place. This process creates a life and death cycle to the memorial. This cycle creates the opportunity for improvement and involvement over time while ignoring the pursuit for permanence. The memorial's design has been under the authoritative control of those who fund them. This barrier to providing input is due to material and labor costs. Marble and steel are high-quality materials that require skilled artisans to be transformed. Clay is cheaper and easier to work with. Leveraging cheaper materials to create ephemeral memorials allows input from a greater number of people. Additionally, clay characteristically has different stages of permanence. While clay can be molded into different forms, it becomes significantly more resistant to erosion once fired. The aesthetics and craftsmanship from historic memorials must remain. To retain history and to not repeat previous mistakes, new memorials require a mix of old and new artifacts. Blending traditional elements such as engraved names, soldiers with firearms, powerful individuals, etc. with new artifacts that are inserted by the citizens and artists creates tension. This tension affects the audience, causing them to question their notion of history. Lost in a web of information, the audience rushes to understand the memorial before it is gone. As one memorial is completed another has eroded, completing the cycle.
