This study investigated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on adult English language instruction in the Quad Cities (Iowa and Illinois) area. Research questions investigated the effects of the emergency transition to online learning on adult English language instruction in the Quad Cities (IA/IL) area and how adult education programs can support English language instructors in the event of ongoing and/or future shifts to emergency remote instruction. A survey of instructors at Black Hawk College (BHC) and Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) was conducted, and an interview was conducted with an English language instructor who was teaching during the pandemic. The author's own experiences as an adult English language instructor at EICC were also considered during the course of the study. Results suggest that programs faced significant challenges related to increased time commitments, decreased class enrollment, limited technology access and digital literacy, and various economic concerns. Additionally, instructors identified benefits to online learning, such as increased digital literacy, improved relationships with students, and enhanced professional development opportunities. The results point to several areas where programs could add additional supports for instructors of adult English learners in the event of additional online learning, including the development of a remote learning plan and increased professional development.
