To address the serious problem of article errors facing Chinese college students, a sample of 100 English sentences from Tai-hui Chiang's (1981) corpus together with 157 final examination papers written by English majors at Tamkang University in Taiwan, ROC, was analyzed. In the 100 sentences, all occurrences of the articles (actual or potential, correct or erroneous) were identified and classified into three types--the uses of the, a/an and O. The errors were further categorized into subtypes on the bases of semantic concepts, syntactic structures, and a few practical conventional rules. To expand error subtypes, the 157 papers were then scanned. Both absolute and relative frequencies of error were calculated and compared. The absolute frequency of error in this study almost doubles that in Chiang's (1.71%:0.91%). In so far as the first two types of error are concerned, Type I (the unnecessary or erroneous use of the) errors are more frequent for the Chinese learners of English than Type II (the use of a/an) errors in terms of absolute frequency. But, in terms of relative frequency (which can better reflect learning difficulty), the reverse is true. The discussion of the obligatory and optional use of the will help teachers explain to Chinese students the correct use of O in all the (transitive) verbal NPs as in "the/O implementation of the plan." In comparing some aspects of signalling article functions between Chinese and English, it was found that since Chinese students learn, not Chinese grammar, but English grammer, in high school, the article errors made by the Chinese college students in this study are due largely to underteaching/underlearning rather than mother tongue interference, and that the double genitive in Chinese as in Leigen de yi ge q(')inx(')in (specific) and yi ge Leigen de q(')inx(')in (generic/nonspecific), both meaning a confidant of Reagan's, could be used to illustrate for the Chinese ESL students these two important but distinctive uses of a/an concretely and effectively. Further research is recommended and implications for teaching are given.
