Many children experience language delays or deficit for a variety of reasons. This project reviewed research on language delays and the therapeutic techniques used to treat children. Interviews were conducted with practicing speech-language pathologists who work with young children to explore techniques that have been successful for them. Speech-language pathologists were asked a variety of questions regarding qualifying for intervention, intervention practices and parent involvement. One of the consistent universal strategies used was to intervene with children, as much as possible, in their "naturalistic environment." Some therapeutic techniques that were discussed included classroom-based intervention, modeling, target sounds or words, sign language and reading aloud to children from an early age. Strategies for overcoming barriers were also discussed.
