Thesis (M.S.W.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2022.

This analytical thesis summarizes all the current information related to the impact of the depiction of fictional suicides in the media on viewers, and the responsibilities of creators. Within the current body of literature, much is known in relation to non-fictional media, such as news reporting, but there is no clear answer as to the impact in fictional media. This question has been asked since the eighteenth century, when John Goethe published the book (The Sorrows of Young Werther) in which the main character committed suicide, which was followed by an increase in suicide rates across Europe. More recently, the popular Netflix show, 13 Reason's Why, has caused concern for parents, professional, and viewers. It has been questioned if the graphic depiction of suicide by the main character in this program could result in suicide contagion. Research studies on this topic have displayed varying results, with some citing positive benefits such as decrease in viewer stigma, and greater knowledge. Other studies report increased suicide rates following the release of these programs. There is no clear answer within the current body of research, which calls for additional research on this subject. Additional topics to explore include the impact of these depictions on those that are more vulnerable, and men.
