The Naval leadership approach to heterogeneity and behaviors of different generational cohorts is the theoretical framework highlighted in this phenomenological qualitative interpretive study. The Navy has distinct cultures, ethnicities, educational backgrounds, and various age groups, all working in the military defense organizational environment specifically to achieve combat readiness. Moreover, an unprecedented percentage of the Naval workforce is Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials with different perceptions and behaviors. The problem is that it is not well known if generational differences among sailors affect performances. The study's primary purpose is to identify particular or specific leadership approaches of Naval leaders leading different generational cohorts and if the perception of age determines the leaders' precise approach based on generational differences. The Naval organization relies on the leaders to accomplish all operational missions with a diverse multi-generational workforce. The leaders most likely use various methods and approaches to remedy or avoid productivity loss. Therefore, the study attempted to understand how Naval leaders develop generational sailors. The study also sought to contribute to future studies on leadership development programs. The 13 preselected senior Naval leaders who agreed to participate in the research were asked to respond to semi-structured open-ended questions. The leaders gave details of their lived experiences with generational sailors and their leadership approach to challenges and behaviors in a command, unit, or team. The data for this study was collected via phone contact and was audio-recorded with the flexibility to encourage the participants to speak freely about their lived experiences for the best possible insight on Navy leadership. The study concluded that Naval leadership is experienced-led. More research is needed to understand how naval leaders minimize the different behaviors of generational sailors through their leadership approach.
