Research recognizes that physical activity habits developed earlier in life are likely to be continued throughout life. To combat rises in obesity rates and declining physical activity levels among adults, studies emphasize the responsibility higher education institutions have in targeting young adult's physical activity habits. Theories of behavior change in educational and fitness settings have been evolving since research identified correlations between motivation and intent to engage in physical activity. Research applying social cognitive theory to fitness settings indicates that an individual's knowledge, outcome expectations, self-efficacy, goals, facilitators, and impediments will influence physical activity engagement. Self-determination theory posits that motivational strength is correlated with behavior change in physical activity, emphasizing the need for stronger intrinsic motives. The results of this study demonstrated no significant differences between groups intentions or motivations to engage in physical activity.
