This thesis document examines how somatic movement studies can be applied to pole dance performance and choreography through the lens of functionality and expressivity. By utilizing specific concepts of Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies, the research aims to unveil how pole dancers can bring ease and expression to their strength-required pole dance movements. This paper is supported by embodied research and movement exploration as discussed in the choreographic process. Such inquiry informed the creative work, Breaking the Cycles, performed on the LeFevre Theatre stage at the Saint Mary's College of California campus, Moraga, California, in June of 2021.
