The lived experience of exotic dancing can be thought of as what a female who dances feels like from the inside. Some of the many reasons why women go into exotic dancing are financial stability, lack of self-esteem, work flexibility, and agency. However, once within the industry, they are faced with unexpected challenges such as interpersonal conflict and victimization. The internal dialogue of needing to dance for survival and wanted a more respectable career creates conflicting feelings. Among the 12 women interviewed for this study, most verbalized they wanted out of the industry but lacked direction. While most of these women felt empowered by their roles as exotic dancers, it also hindered their growth, especially for those that required substance use for courage to perform. Among the 12 females who voluntarily participated in this qualitative research were chosen and randomly selected from a small sample within the adult entertainment industry. Utilizing heuristic methodology by posting an ad online, recruitment letters were sent out, as so did the participants contact the researcher. An interpretative approach applied to understand participants experiences to allow for themes to emerge. The phenomenological method aimed to explore each dancer's involvement and express their thoughts and feelings through their lens. The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological challenges experienced by dancers and ways in which society can help mitigate these challenges. Most of the dancers in this study revealed no mental health challenges; however, admitted to drinking alcohol to perform. Furthermore, they spoke of the stresses of the work and getting out of the profession. Based on these findings, the primary researcher has concluded that dancing for most individuals causes mental health challenges such as low-self-esteem, poor self-efficacy, and excessive worry.
