Max Reger (1873-1916) was an influential German composer of the late Romantic period. He saw himself as being part of the succession of great German composers from J. S. Bach to Beethoven and Brahms. In particular, the influence of Brahms's compositional style is very apparent in Reger's piano music, such as in his development of motivic material and interest in writing variations for solo piano. Through comparing Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Telemann, op. 134 (1914) to Brahms's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24 (1861), this document examines Brahms's influence on Reger's musical language according to six criteria: the formal structure of Brahms, op. 24, and Reger, op. 134; Baroque elements: contrast, ornamentation, paired variations; sound effects; complex rhythmic patterns; harmonic progressions; and the fugue construction: contrasting textural patterns in a virtuosic style. Understanding the connection between Reger and Brahms's compositional methods and styles will provide performers with greater insight into Reger's piano music and strengthen their interpretations of his works.
