Counselors working with traumatized clients should anticipate the possibility of experiencing vicarious trauma, based on the nature of the work. Vicarious trauma has varying effects on individuals. When looking specifically at spirituality, research has reported both positive and negative effects of vicarious trauma on a counselor's own spirituality. Overall, most studies suggest that spirituality can work as a protective element against vicarious trauma. Research has established that Christian counselors are already utilizing a more spiritual approach to counseling; however, there have not been enough studies that examine how that same spiritual approach might help them cope when working with traumatized clients. Most studies that have examined counselors and vicarious trauma have done so using 'spiritual' as a general term. This generic qualitative examination looked at ten licensed professional counselors, who self-identified as Christians, and the spiritual practices they used while working with clients who have experienced trauma. Specifically, this dissertation focused on participants who are counselors working from a traditional and secular clinical approach, who also self-identify as Christian. Semi-structured interviews with the participants were analyzed using the six-step framework for thematic data analysis created by Braun and Clarke. Analysis of the interviews illuminated what spirituality looks like when working with clients experiencing trauma and discussed what coping strategies, defined as both cognitive and behavioral ways to process stressful situations, have looked like. This study discussed the potential efficacy of those spiritual practices as coping and self-care tools for counselors while working specifically with clients dealing with trauma.
