Monumental events occurred in America over the past several decades, including deinstitutionalization and mass incarceration, leading to an increase in incarcerated populations. As systems arduously shift from a punitive to a more encompassing rehabilitative stance, we are led to believe correctional departments are geared not only to reduce crime, but also reduce recidivism. Hope for change is an essential component for recidivism reduction; yet, resting on hope is not enough for rolling out rehabilitative programs across the country. Questions remain as to what former offenders have utilized and continue utilizing to successfully reintegrate into society and not fall prey to recidivism. Two interviews with former offenders were conducted virtually. This study utilized an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method to examine the participant's (i.e., former offender's) shared meaning of their lived experience. It is through these lived experiences the phenomena of extratherapeutic factors were explored. Following transcriptions of the interviews, data analysis resulted in the emergence of five themes (Loyalty, Situational Stressors, Community, Work/Livelihood, Support System) and one subtheme (Intrinsic Motivation) across three categories. My findings led to common themes associated with the participants' lived experiences even though each experience was vastly different. There were limitations, however, I covered along with recommendations, ideas for future research, and reviewed implications for practice in the field of counseling psychology. Psychologists working at any juncture of an offender's rehabilitative journey have an ethical obligation to aid in the rehabilitative process. Change-no matter how small-can occur, promoting successful reintegration and creating a quality-of-life worth living for every individual.
