This dissertation examines the practice in the Synoptic Gospels of applying to Jesus Old Testament (OT) passages that originally referred to YHWH. Critical scholarship in the last two centuries has favored the theory that the Synoptics evidence a low Christology in the primitive church, while John's Gospel displays a high Christology developed in the decades to follow. However, the YHWH-text phenomenon in the Synoptics contradicts that theory by revealing an early and united Christian understanding of Jesus as YHWH. The introductory chapter explains the practice and significance of YHWH-texts applied to Jesus in the New Testament (NT). The importance of the divine name YHWH in the Hebrew Scriptures and its impact in the Greek Septuagint is discussed, as well as the uniqueness of the "Name" in OT Jewish monotheism. Appellations of the divine name in the NT-primarily κύριος-are also examined. Following several NT examples of the YHWH-text phenomenon, the discussion turns to the significance of the phenomenon for Christological studies. The chapter surveys modern scholarship on the origin and meaning of Jesus as "Lord" and recent scholarly approaches in Jesus studies that touch on the YHWH-text phenomenon to varying degrees. The meat of this biblical-theological study is found its three respective chapters on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (chapters 2-4), which examine numerous clear and probable cases of OT YHWH-texts applied to Jesus. Each of the three chapters begins with a brief summary of the evangelist's Christological emphases, before highlighting various examples of the YHWH-text phenomenon. The list of passages examined in each Synoptic Gospel may be considered complete, though not exhaustive. Each synoptic survey includes initial statements on the significance of the practice, anticipating more extensive remarks in the concluding chapter. The final chapter highlights five realizations and five ramifications of the YHWH-text phenomenon in the Synoptics. The realizations focus on the frequency, diversity, and ubiquity of the practice, as well as its wide range of OT source material and its parallel to the NT practice of applying OT messianic texts to Jesus. Ramifications of the study include the early deliberate employment of YHWH-texts to Jesus, the likelihood that Jesus is the source of the practice, the high Christology of the Synoptics (rivaling that in John's Gospel), and the redemptive-historical metanarrative that Jesus is the divine interpreter and central figure of the Jewish Scriptures. In summary, understanding the prolific application of OT YHWH-texts to Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels cannot be neglected in biblical scholarship without truncating genuine NT Christology.
