All authors imagine an audience for their literary works. They make assumptions about who their readers are and the values they hold. Implied reader methodologies examine textual clues to discern the audience as imagined/assumed-implied-by the author. Within the field of biblical studies, implied reader methodologies have been applied only to narratives. Therefore, in New Testament studies they have been applied primarily to the Gospels and the Book of Acts. This study shows that it is also possible to effectively apply an implied reader methodology to biblical epistles. More specifically, it shows it is possible to apply an implied reader methodology to biblical epistles in such a manner that an implied female reader can be discerned, even when women are not explicitly acknowledged in the text.To show this, the study develops an implied reader methodology, adapted from the signals set forth by Gerald Prince and Helen Rothschild Ewald, and applies it to 1 Corinthians to discern the implied female reader. This is achieved by comparing the findings of 1 Corinthians 7:1-16; 25-40 and 11:2-16, where women are explicitly acknowledged, with 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, where women are not explicitly acknowledged but many of the same signals are used in reference to "the weak" and "the strong." This study discerns that while women are implied among both "the weak" and "the strong," they are more heavily implied as being among "the strong.".
