The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that the illumination of the Holy Spirit is a volitional work that enables a humble submission to Scripture's clear meaning. Consequently, the traditional view of illumination, which argues that illumination consists of the Spirit's work to reveal the meaning of biblical texts, is rejected. Man is capable of understanding the full message of God's clear Word. In illumination, the Spirit does not give cognition of the text's interpretation. Instead, He softens the heart so that man responds in submission to the implications of the text.
