Worship has been an intergenerational activity for most of Christian history. In the twentieth century, new developmental theories and changing Christian formation practices moved the church toward age-appropriate, or age-segregated, ministry. Intergenerational liturgy became a rarity in mainline protestant traditions across the United States, including the United Methodist Church. This dissertation addresses the problem of age-segregated worship by developing a practical theology for intergenerational liturgy in the United Methodist setting. The project begins with a survey of current worship practices with children and youth. It explores the formative role of liturgy, the relational nature of grace, and the function of narrative in human identity. Ultimately, these concepts are integrated into a practical theology of intergenerational liturgy as the rehearsal of God's divine narrative where all ages mature in faith as performers in a shared story.
