The best interpretation should explain as many aspects of a text as possible with the minimum remaining ambiguity. The current study developed from the desire to interpret Isaiah 24-27 in this manner, noticing that most interpretations of this corpus either leave elements unexplained or do not incorporate fully the text in its final form. This observation is especially pronounced for Isaiah 24-27, a group of chapters replete with ambiguities and concomitant disagreements. Recent years have seen a welcome proliferation of studies of these chapters, coinciding with renewed interest in eschatology/apocalyptic. The problem of ambiguity and disparate interpretations, however, remains. The goal of this study is to bring clarity to the process of dealing with this ambiguous text and to establish an appropriate method of inquiry.The current study assumes that Isaiah 24-27 is rhetorical in the most basic sense, that is, it seeks to persuade an audience. But it further asserts that Isaiah 24-27 has an underlying argument that is cohesive and can be reconstructed, a claim which is sure to be contested. The rhetorical critical method proposed by George Kennedy for New Testament interpretation and applied by Karl Moller and Joel Barker to the Old Testament is the starting point, but the method advances by proposing a cohesive argument to which the text refers. This requires interpretation of each statement and a hypothetical ordering of them into a valid argument form. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that universal and particularly are intentionally juxtaposed in Isaiah 24-27 for the express purpose of making the reader consider the relationship between Israel's salvation and that of the nations. This thesis offers the possibility of reading this text coherently without resorting to redactional rescues, cryptic cyphers, or definitive dating.The study proceeds in five chapters. The first chapter defines key terms, defends the idea of reconstructing argument, and espouses the methodology. The second is an abbreviated survey of literature published since the year 2000 to situate the current study in the scholarly milieu. The third reviews key exegetical issues: genre, the identity of the city/cities, date of the corpus, its compositions/structure, the identity of the "eternal covenant", the nature of the resurrection in 26:19, and the problem of universal and particular. Chapter four reconstructs an argument to create the raw material for rhetorical analysis. Isaiah 24-27 argues that YHWH will eliminate death, both raising the slain faithful and giving immortality to all who worship him, and he will restore Israel from the final exile. Chapter five tests this conclusion as a hypothesis for an exposition of the whole text. It proceeds through each unit, demonstrating how this argument builds. The tension between universal and particular resolves when one sees Israel as a covenant mediator to the nations. Israel's national salvation is the antecedent to the universal offer of salvation. The study concludes with suggestions for further study.

Im dritten Kapitel werden exegetische Schlusselfragen erortert: die Gattung, die Identitat der Stadt/Stadte, das Datum des Korpus, seine Zusammensetzung/Struktur, die Identitat des "ewigen Bundes", die Natur der Auferstehung in 26,19 und das Problem des Allgemeinen und des Besonderen. In Kapitel vier wird ein Argument rekonstruiert, um das Rohmaterial fur die rhetorische Analyse zu schaffen. In Jesaja 24-27 wird argumentiert, dass JHWH den Tod beseitigen wird, indem er sowohl die erschlagenen Glaubigen auferweckt als auch allen, die ihn anbeten, Unsterblichkeit verleiht, und dass er Israel aus dem endgultigen Exil wiederherstellen wird. In Kapitel funf wird diese Schlussfolgerung als Hypothese fur die Auslegung des gesamten Textes gepruft. Es geht durch jede Einheit und zeigt, wie sich dieses Argument aufbaut. Die Spannung zwischen dem Allgemeinen und dem Besonderen lost sich auf, wenn man Israel als Bundesvermittler fur die Volker betrachtet. Israels nationales Heil ist die Vorstufe zum universalen Heilsangebot. Die Studie schliest mit Vorschlagen fur weitere Studien.
