The anointing of the sick with blessed oil is an ancient Christian custom, attested to in the apostolic age and present in the liturgical practices of both East and West. The established celebration of Holy Unction in the Churches of the Byzantine Rite (also known as the Euchelaion) is very elaborate and includes the reading of seven sets of Scripture passages and seven prayers read by the priests. This complexity of the rite raises questions about its historical origin. The euchology of the celebration also reveals theological aspects of the blessing of oil and anointing of the sick that go beyond traditionally accepted explanation of the purpose of the sacrament. This calls for historical and theological research into a deeper understanding of how Holy Oil was perceived in the Byzantine Church over the course of the development of the celebration of the Euchelaion. This dissertation makes a number of important contributions to the understanding of the historical and theological aspects of the Byzantine sacrament of the anointing of the sick. Through a detailed analysis of the manuscript sources, it identifies two distinct stages in the development of the Byzantine rite of Holy Unction. The first stage lasted until the end of the twelfth century. The rites of the first stage reached substantial variety in their ritual form and used extensive euchology of the intercession for the sick. Beginning with the thirteenth century, those rites were replaced with a new arrangement of Unction that emphasized forgiveness of sins. This dissertation identifies the events related to the Fourth Crusade as the most likely reason for the change in the direction of the historical development of the rite. The subsequent development of the celebration was characterized by an adherence to the format of seven sets of Scriptural pericopes and presbyteral prayers, while showing variety in the selection of readings and prayer texts. The development in the rite of Holy Unction came to an end with the advance of the printing press, when one arrangement was selected for early editions of a printed Euchologion, making that specific text an accepted form of the celebration of the sacrament in the churches of the Byzantine Rite. The manuscript research shows that over the course of its historical development, the Byzantine Rite of Unction utilized rich euchology meant for intercessions for those who are ill and for the blessing of the oil of anointing. This dissertation identified the presbyteral prayers, many of them previously unknown, that were used in various arrangements of the Euchelaion over the centuries, and provided their English translations. Through a detailed analysis of this euchological material, this dissertation elucidates rich theological themes of human sickness as a result of the Fall, and healing as accomplished in the incarnation of the Son of God. The prayers of Unction also reveal rich symbology of blessed oil, pointing to the understanding of the anointing with Holy Oil as accomplishing the sacramental union with the healer of humanity, Jesus Christ.
