Chapter one will frame the discussion on the importance of pastoral theology for North American pastors as seen in their approach to the Lord's Supper. Chapter one will identify the research methodology for this dissertation in analyzing John Flavel's sermons and books. The opening chapter will also discuss the dissertation's originality and contribution of John Flavel's pastoral approach to the Lord's Supper, and how his approach will be beneficial for the field of North American Missiology. The chapter will include the importance of John Flavel and his writings on key Christian leaders and writers over the last two hundred years. Chapter 2 will expound on John Flavel's historical context and his personal life and ministry. Chapter 2 will also establish Flavel's theological foundations for his approach to ministry. Chapter 3 will define the essential meaning of the Lord's Supper in the writings of John Flavel through his doctrine of salvation. Special attention will be given to Flavel's twelve meditations on the Lord's Supper, highlighting the importance of true salvation when approaching the Lord's Table. The meditations on the Lord's Supper will serve as a foundation for the rest of this study as they highlight the theological emphasis in the rest of his writings. Chapter 4 will address the necessity of conversion before one comes to the Lord's Table. Flavel emphasized the necessity of conversion throughout his writings focusing on the depravity of man and the deceiving power of sin. Flavel's approach to the Lord's Supper was to convict and challenge the sinner before they could be comforted with the grace of the gospel which also is a common theme throughout all of Flavel's writings. Flavel wanted to comfort his readers with Christ, but only after he ensured that they were truly converted. Chapter 5 will highlight one of the driving forces of Flavel's ministry-how to win and keep the heart in Christ. He does not focus on the external life of a believer but on cultivating the inner person of the heart. Flavel focuses on how to live in union with God and fight the various inner sins of the heart. This chapter will focus on specific concerns that Flavel had when he was preparing his people to receive the Lord's Supper. A primary concern of Flavel's ministry was his desire to keep the hearts of his people in communion with Christ, and Flavel believed the Lord's Supper was a vital tool to help believers discern their relationship with Christ through meditation and self examination. Chapter 6 will summarize Flavel's pastoral approach to the Lord's Supper and how his approach exemplifies the rest of this pastoral theology, showing how Flavel may serve as a model to help current pastors strengthen the shepherding of their own congregations, preparing them for eternity. Chapter 7 will offer renewal and revitalization implications of Flavel's pastoral approach of the Lord's Supper and how his approach may be profitable for contemporary pastors. This chapter will examine the strength of Flavel's approach and how his teachings can serve as a model and an encouragement to North American pastors. This chapter will emphasize how following Flavel's pastoral approach to the Lord's Supper may be a means for church renewal and revitalization.
