Navy chaplains who desire to combat destructive behaviors in Service members must look at what shapes and drives behavior and mindset, which is a matter of the heart and soul. Colloquially, the heart of every issue is an issue of the heart; meaning at the core of every destructive behavior is an underlying belief in the heart, which is a spiritual issue. As of this writing, the top six destructive behaviors - in order of precedence - in the Navy are: suicide-related behavior (SRB), driving under the influence (DUI), domestic violence (DV), sexual assault (SXA), alcohol-related incidents (ARI), and drug abuse (DA). The Department of the Navy (DON), which includes the Marine Corps, has invested millions of dollars into combating these incidents to little avail. The research demonstrates that focusing on root causes is the starting point on how the Navy should eradicate destructive behaviors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological ethnographic study is to develop a Navy chaplain's approach to combating and reversing destructive behaviors in Service members.The author proposes to target root causes instead of combatting the destructive behaviors. The author's tree illustration is proposed in the final project entitled Freedom Vision, which is a one-day, gospel-centered, Navy chaplain-led, restoration workshop for Service members seeking lasting freedom (in Christ) from destructive behaviors. Freedom Vision's objective is to fulfill a biblical theme of renewal and restoration of shalom and human flourishing "on Earth as it is in Heaven" through the safety of confidential communications based on policy (Secretary of the Navy Instruction 1730.9A, Privileged and Confidential Communications to Chaplains).This dissertation captures lessons learned (LL) and after action review (AAR) reports from over 200 interviews of prior military and active duty Service members, military dependents, and civilians who completed various freedom workshops. This data was analyzed with six years of ethnographic research of faith-based recovery programs. The completion of a Freedom Vision workshop results in both significant deliverance from negative spiritual strongholds and the breaking familial destructive patterns or habits.
