Kazoh Kitmaori's The Theology of the Pain of God has been mistaken as masochistic. The primary purpose of the dissertation is to research whether Kazoh Kitamori's The Theology of the Pain of God inspires masochistic suffering or redemptive suffering. As a Japanese Lutheran theologian, he interpreted Martin Luther's Theology of the Cross into a Buddhist, Japanese context and evaluated his theological thought with Luther's theology of Cross and Hidden God. Further, to adequately asses his theology, a psychoanalytical method was engaged to understand the meaning of the term masochism over time to better perceive how psychoanalysis classifies a Christian's intention of suffering. Based on the data from psychoanalysis of how pastors understand the Christian suffering is different from masochism, the outcome of the research was applied in the context of the low-income employees of Hong Kong. Their predicament involved significant suffering because of the work culture changed. The value of family was severely undermined by the introduction of the capitalist work culture allowing employers to attract international capital through cheap labor and long working hours. The study was based on the conversations with the low-income employees of the congregants of the Hong Kong Chinese population. The research also engaged psychoanalytical method, Sociological research data and theological analysis. The dissertation concluded that even though it's an interpretation of Luther's theology of Cross and Hidden God, Kitamori's theology of the pain of God was mistaken as masochistic. Kitamori primarily emphasized wrath and the pain of God, whereas Luther's main emphasis was to discover the gracious God. Kitamori focuses on the cost of the resurrection. Kitamori argues masochists are selfish because self-hatred is a selfish outcome of inner will power, whereas accepting the suffering that comes outside can only be considered as mystical suffering, which is a required Christian lifestyle. I argue that our suffering is redemptive based on the scripture 1 Peter 2:21. Joy in suffering is not necessarily masochistic. It can be transformative, redemptive and a sanctifying work of God through the death, cross and resurrection of Christ in suffering. There is life and hope in suffering. Masochism would remain in a state of suffering, whereas redemptive suffering has meaning and witness. Based on the arguments of the psychologists, the suffering Christian practice in faith is not masochistic but redemptive since Christian suffering follows the footsteps of Christ. The low-income employees understand their predicament is emotional suffering caused by the imbalance of long working hours and less quality time with family. They face human-made suffering. Non-profit organizations and churches need to create a friendly, positive workplace for these organizations to help them enrich the lives of employees and employers as well.
