Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
This dissertation will challenge the conclusions that multisite models are incompatible with Baptist congregational polity. It will make the case that a model of multisite church exists which is compatible with Baptist church definitions and practices. In doing so, it will provide a new definition for multisite churches that is a compatible supplement to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, and it will provide guidance for how multisite churches can function in a more biblical way. The first chapter provides an overview of the current discussions around multisite churches, from both supporters and critics. It also describes the goal of the dissertation and the methodology used for coming to the final conclusions. Finally, it includes my own personal experience in a multisite church, and the motivation behind my research. The second chapter provides an overview of the history ofmultisite models and definitions and describes some common assumptions of the multisite movement. It also looks at some multisite precedents, which have been considered previously and found not to be true predecessors ofmultisite churches. However, looked at through a different lens, this dissertation concludes they were, in fact, early models ofmultisite churches. It then tracks a brief history of the model from the 1950s to today. Chapter two also includes an overview of how multisite models have been accepted and/or promoted by leaders and entities in the Southern Baptist Convention. Chapters three through five provide a model for a healthy multisite church. After an initial discussion of the historical marks of a church in chapter three, the chapters then consider eleven aspects of a healthy church. Specifically, they look at biblical examples, historic Baptist thought, and current multisite thoughts ofthese eleven topics. The thoughts ofmultisite advocates are scrutinized to see ifthey provide guidance and practice that is consistent with biblical and Baptist understanding. Finally, each section provides recommendations for how multisite churches can employ these eleven aspects in their church in way that is faithful to the biblical examples. Chapter five concludes with a summary of the three chapters, which functions as an ecclesiological guide for how multisite churches should function under the guidelines of each healthy church aspect. Chapter six addresses critiques ofmultisite churches. Critics have been very vocal with their critiques about multisite churches, but the response by multisite advocates has been minimal. This chapter fills that void by giving well-formed answers to the critiques posed. Finally, the concluding chapter, chapter seven, provides something promised in the first chapter: a new definition for multisite churches. This definition narrows the broader popular definition ofmultisite churches. It presents a definition that is compatible with Baptist ecclesiology and which functions as a supplement to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000's definition of a church. The hope ofthis dissertation is to provide a sure footing for multisite churches with congregational polity, and to give Southern Baptist churches confidence that can function biblically as a multisite church. In our present situation, churches need to utilize whatever valid means are available in the efforts of church planting, church growth, and church revitalization for the sake of the Gospel ofChrist. I hope that it is a blessing to multisite leaders and a benefit to our Convention as it helps churches address the needs of church planting and church revitalization.
