Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
This dissertation argues that the foundation of the theological system of nineteenth century Southern Baptist Patrick Hues Mell is established upon the doctrines of the divine decree and the providence of God. The dissertation ultimately concludes that Mell builds his theology on his belief that God has established an eternal decree within himself before the foundation of the world and then in his providence governs his creation so that the decree comes to pass. The dissertation begins with an opening chapter which demonstrates the historical prominence of Patrick Hues Mell and the need for an analysis of his theology as a whole. While some have endeavored to understand Mell, those who have aimed to interact with his theology have not attempted to understand it as a systematic whole. Following the introduction, a biographical chapter chronicling the life of Patrick Hues Mell is provided. The chapter serves to provide a much-needed biographical overview of this important but forgotten historic Baptist figure while simultaneously providing the historical context in which he attempted to do theology. Following the biographical overview, Chapter 3 seeks to demonstrate and explain the foundation of Mell's theological system of thought in the doctrines of the divine decree and the providence of God. By examining Mell's own writings, these twin doctrines are shown to be foundational to his system of theology. With the foundation of the decree and the providence of God firmly in place, the dissertation next demonstrates how these doctrines inform Mell's other theological conclusions. In particular, Chapter 4 examines Mell's soteriological views, especially his focus on the covenant of redemption and the doctrine of predestination. Chapter 5 subsequently offers a discussion of Mell's ecclesiological positions, especially his views regarding church discipline. Mell's writings on the subject come in response to a particular case of church discipline, and the chapter aims to demonstrate that Mell's commitment to the doctrines of the divine decree and the providence of God ultimately explains how he arrives at his conclusion. Finally, Chapter 6 considers how the doctrines of the divine decree and the providence of God influence Mell's defense of slavery.
