After defending every stroke of the law in Matthew 5:18c, Jesus addressed its duration in 18d. Scholars debate what must be fulfilled before the law disappears. Some argue that Jesus has already fulfilled everything for that to have happened, others claim that every prophecy must be fulfilled, yet others contend that the entire law must be fulfilled ethically, hermeneutically, or both. However, this debate over the content of panta in 18d ignores its denotation, "everything," and assumes the law's disappearance. Consulting ancient texts and contemporary scholarship, this dissertation exegetes Matthew 5:18d in its intertextual, canonical context. To achieve this, it considers the law's intended duration (forever), its impartation into human minds and hearts by the Holy Spirit, its hermeneutical renewal via the career of Jesus, and the appropriate sense of heos (while). This study, therefore, concludes, "Not one iota nor one serif shall disappear from the law while everything is fulfilled," including Jesus's career, other prophesied events, Jesus's hermeneutics, and the Holy Spirit's renewal of all who believe. In New Jerusalem, God's law endures forever in human hearts.
