Although several studies in the past century have examined Paul's cultic metaphors, it is the purpose of this study to concentrate on his understanding of the believer as a priest. Since Paul's use of priestly language with reference to the believer is figurative, after a chapter on the history of research on the subject, new approaches from cognitive linguistics for the research of figurative language are explored as the primary methodological tool for the task. Chapters 3-6 explore the metaphorical use of language related to the priesthood in Paul, primarily in Rom 15.16, 1 Cor 3.10-17, 2 Cor 6.14-7.1 and Phil 2.17 and 4.18. Each chapter begins with a study of the NT context in which priestly language appears, followed by the proposal and defense of an OT source, whether keyed to a particular text or linked to a specific OT image, and concludes with a final summary of the conceptual pattern envisioned by Paul in that particular text. The thesis of this dissertation is that, undergirding each of these texts is a cognitive concept of the believer as a priest, developed from Paul's understanding of the Old Testament and viewed through a Christological and eschatological framework. In this way, through allusions to the OT, Paul intends to lead new covenant believers to understand gospel ministry as the eschatological fulfillment of the priestly service of the old covenant. A final chapter synthesizes the texts studied and their relationship to Paul's theology.
