The purpose of this dissertation was to provide an interpretative strategy to aid in understanding the abrupt and enigmatic ending of Mark's Gospel at 16:8. Scholars have long wondered how Mark might have intended for his audience to respond to his Gospel, specifically in regard to the unusual way in which he concluded his narrative: "And they said nothing to anyone because they were afraid." Scholars propose that Mark meant to evoke a response from his audience that would move them to tell the story that the women at the tomb were afraid to tell. Such a proposal is enticing, though it amounts to mere conjecture, as there has been little in the way of data that would support such a claim. The aim of this research is in attempt to provide such data as have been missing up to this point. The thesis of this dissertation is that Mark overtly employed numerous portions of Ps 22, whether by quote or allusion, within his passion/resurrection narrative in order to point his readers to the whole of the psalm. The major themes of the psalm, the suffering of the righteous, the faithfulness and deliverance of God, and the proclamation of the work of God, should be read as a subtext or commentary connecting to these same elements within the conclusion of Mark's Gospel. Thus, the explicit theme in the conclusion of Ps 22, the proclamation of the works of God to future generations yet unborn, parallels the implicit thematic interpretation of the conclusion of Mark wherein the onus of gospel proclamation is placed on Mark's audience. As Ps 22 is Mark's final direct citation of the OT, clues exist within the context of the whole psalm that illuminate the conclusion of Mark's Gospel. This thesis has been tested in the following way. First, instances of intertextuality within Mark have been examined to validate that the contexts of OT passages employed in Mark's narrative align with the context in which he uses them. Additionally, the major themes found within those OT texts become programmatic within Mark's narrative. Second, the context and themes of Ps 22 were closely examined and compared with Mark's passion narrative to identify continuity between the two. Third, Richard Hays's method of interpreting intertextuality in the Gospel of Mark was applied directly to Ps 22. Hays's model allows for a three-tiered application of OT texts used by Mark to Israel, Jesus, and the church. Fourth, these findings are synthesized to form an interpretive lens by which Mark's audience may have understood the conclusion to his Gospel. A contextual reading of Ps 22, wherein the psalmist vowed to declare the works of God to the nations, supports the suggestion that Mark's abrupt ending was meant to encourage his audience to proclaim the good news of Jesus.
