This study will argue that Paul's intended meaning in 1 Cor 14:34-35 is consistent with the context of 1 Corinthians and the rest of Pauline theology and practice. Paul writes, "Women in the church are to be silent [σιγάτωσαν], for I do not permit them to speak, but to be in submission, just as also the law says. Now if anyone wants to learn, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to speak in church" (1 Cor 14:34-35). Some scholars have claimed that these words are inconsistent with the rest of Paul's writing and practice. This study will primarily focus on the meaning of σιγάω as a basis for consistency. Chapter one will include the proposed thesis, the need for the study, method, and original contribution. This chapter will also cover the history of research, which is divided into literary, historical, and theological interpretations. Chapter two will explore the semantic range of σιγάω, including literary arguments in favor of consistency. First, there will be a review of lexical works and dictionaries to discover how they take the term in 1 Cor 14:34. Second, this study will broaden to usage in ancient Greek literature (narrowed by date and priority given to works closest in time to the New Testament). Third, the usage of σιγάω will be discussed throughout the New Testament. Finally, this chapter will show how σιγάω and the silencing of women in the church in 1 Cor 14:34 is consistent with Paul's other comments in 1 Cor 14:26-40 (men and women speaking); 12:11 (the work of the Spirit); and 11:5 (women praying and prophesying). Chapter three will compare Paul's words with the Greco-Roman context of women's education and speech. This chapter will explore the historical and cultural arguments, and how they impact a consistent reading and application of Paul's view on women. Concerning methodology, scholars do not always explain how they are consistent in applying background studies with other NT passages in the same way they apply background to gender passages. Chapter three will attempt to prove three points: (1) Paul gave his instructions within a diverse historical context; (2) men and women were both creating problems in Corinth; and (3) the basis of Paul's instructions is the OT law and not culture. Chapter four will argue for the consistency of 1 Cor 14:34-35 with Pauline theology and practice. This chapter will demonstrate how the passage fits within Paul's theological principles (in Gal 3:28 and 1 Tim 2:9-14) and Paul's practice (in Acts 16:11-16; Rom 16:1-7; Phil 4:2-3; and Col 4:15). Attention to each individual context will show the uniqueness of each passage instead of their contradictions.Chapter five will conclude the study by summarizing the evidence for the place of 1 Cor 14:34-35 within the New Testament. It will include a brief comment concerning the implications of a complementarian reading. The Appendix will list the occurrences of σιγάω in Greek literature that were selected in chapter two for review. While not an exhaustive list, it will bring much needed data to light in order to facilitate additional discussion.
