Driven by the desire to experience the natural threshold between Cincinnati and the Ohio River, it is the goal of this thesis to identify and obtain one of the remaining plots of vacant land that borders the Ohio River within the context of Cincinnati, Ohio for the proposal of a natural conservation park. Beginning with the selected site, the document will introduce the reader to the existing physical conditions of the landscape as well as zoning, land ownership, and floodplain elevations. The proposal will be written with Cincinnati Parks as the hypothetical client, with research of existing Cincinnati Parks-owned riverfront parks as a precedent for the proposed park features as well as justification for the new addition to the city. This research and analysis of other riverfront precedents from around the world will set the tone for a general site plan strategy, with site plan programming developing from a site series exercise that defines spaces and paths throughout the site in tandem with response to the existing topography and delineation of land use. As the project is inspired by mudlarking, the design of the project will be studied and organized through similar ideas of curiosity, exploration, and discovery. Just as much as the proposed park mission is to conserve the natural history of the site's native species and natural conditions, the project will aim to protect the site's cultural history of development, industrial uses, and artifacts that are turned over by the river as evidence of both the river and Cincinnati's history.
