With a mental health crisis emerging in the wake of a global pandemic, meditation practice(s) have gained wide appeal as a technique to recalibrate the mind. However, it is difficult for beginners to stay motivated, track progress or find guidance. Due to this, many technological aids have also become available in the market - like meditation apps, guided audio, entrainment, neurofeedback, etc. Furthermore, emerging technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Electroencephalography (EEG) are enabling new ways to explore our cognitive and perceptual processes. VR provides a sensorium of stimulation, while EEG deciphers our brain activity in response. Thus, the marriage of these technologies is apt for probing into deeper states of mind. In this thesis, I will combine VR and EEG to explore a new way to contextualize meditation and pose an experiential possibility of deeper self-awareness through an embodied meditation on Light. This project is a hybrid art and science experiment that coalesces three distinct topics together - (1) embodied cognition in VR, (2) EEG-based neurofeedback, and (3) white light meditation. The final prototype is a VR experience called "Inner Light" that uses guided audio-visual feedback based on a player's brain activity to induce a relaxed but focused mental state. The players see a visualization of their own virtual body created from the electrical signals of their brain. The experience rewards players with positive audio-visual cues whenever they access a relaxed flow state of mind (indicated by the EEG signals). The goal is to consistently access this mental state and unlock a virtual out-of-body experience. In my literature review, I will explore perspectives on experiencing Light from different cultural-religious perspectives as well as near-death experiences, while also correlating it with contemporary theories and research within neuroscience, psychology and philosophy.
