The purpose of this thesis project is to examine how virtual elements in mobile augmented reality provide expressive opportunities through facial expressions in the entertaining narratives of peer-to-peer communication. Arguably for the first time in history, augmented reality presents an opportunity to introduce a new nonverbal cue by combining in-person actions and digital medium expression. To understand its potential, I review literature on emojis, GIFs, avatars, special needs, and nonverbal cues in mixed reality. I learn to emphasize personal expression and relevancy to the interlocutor's task so that they act as insight into one's personality. I apply this to seven Snapchat filter prototypes that allow users to control augmented elements using facial expressions. I find tremendous success, totalling eight-hundred thousand interactions with one experience contributing six-hundred-thousand interactions. Users are able to create new contextual meanings and feel more connected to their emotions and others. I suggest that future research consider facial emotion recognition on existing social platforms so users may readily convey emotions to many peers. Importantly, some decisions must remain in the hands of users and not computing technologies so as not to detract from one's humanity.
