Providing STEM instruction to elementary school students has seemingly had a positive impact on both teachers and students. Incorporating different forms of technology and enhancing everyday lessons with new resources helps to engage students and allow them to truly enjoy what they are learning about. Lessons like these are going to be highly beneficial for ENL students learning English because STEM combines the core elements of group work, communication and team building. Furthermore, it will help to improve communication skills, and build self-efficacy in the classroom and in their daily lives. This study examined the impact of implementing STEM instruction into the ENL (English as a New Language) classroom and its effects on the four language domains (reading, writing, speaking, listening). The participants of this study were twenty-two second grade students, including five English Language Learners (ELL'S). To begin the unit, they were given an eight question survey to rate their attitudes towards STEM instruction and feelings towards participating and asking questions in class. The unit consisted of several learning experiences about habitats, life cycles, seeds and seed dispersal. To culminate the unit, students participated in an engineering design challenge where they created a seed dispersal tool that would be best fit for one type of habitat. Additionally, they were given the same survey to measure if their feelings increased or decreased as the unit progressed. The results of the study determined that STEM learning and participating in the engineering design process have a positive effect on language skills.
