This dissertation explores the ways in which contemporary authors update the figure of the vampire in narratives written in Spanish or in dialogue with Latin American or Latinx culture. By studying a variety of genres (novel, short story, and novella), geographical origins or referents (Mexico, Colombia, Canada, and the United States), and languages (Spanish, English, and Spanglish) we are able to compare and contrast diverse approaches to the challenge of writing vampires that speak to current contexts. The dissertation has three chapters, the first of which outlines influential vampire works from the late 19th to the late 20th centuries and analyzes how traditions influence the corpus under study in two ways: one, in the frequency with which authors respond to canonical and popular vampire fictions by making them part of their own fictional world and through the inclusion of intertextual commentary; the other, in the use of tradition as a theme within the texts as characters contend with the weight of familial and cultural legacies. The second chapter looks at hunger, understood literally and figuratively, as a set of desires that underpin the quests for power, community, and the expression of gender identity and sexuality for both vampire and human characters. The final chapter examines the categorizations that social and cultural forces impose on vampiric and human bodies, and how these bodies challenge said categorizations, causing instability and uncertainty in the frontiers between the human, the vampiric, and the animal.
