Turnaround coaching is when a coach transforms a losing program into a winning program. This study aims to better understand how Division III basketball coaches turn around a basketball program. Previous studies have indicated important elements in coaching, maintaining successful athletic programs, and turnaround coaching (Hall, 2018; Schroeder, 2010; Vallee & Bloom, 2005; Westfall, 2016). However, this is the first study to bridge the gap between the previous literature. This phenomenological analysis contained five participants (n = 5) who participated in two interviews that focused on their experiences on turning around a basketball program and sustaining success. The participants from this study have over 2,000 combined career head coaching wins at the collegiate level. Results from this study suggest that there are common themes in turning around turning around a basketball program which are: (a) desire for the job, (b) vision for excellence, (c) set clear expectations, (d) execute strategy, (e) raise the competition level, and (f) sustainability. The results from this study also indicated four common leadership qualities among the coaches which were: (a) visionary, (b) strategist, (c) adaptability, and (d) self-confidence. This study concludes to help future basketball coaches, administrators, and schools as well as provide insights to professional development opportunities.Keywords: turnaround, leadership, coaching.
