The objective of this study is to develop a robust understanding of the sports-career experiences that affect the post-career transition of professional athletes. This phenomenological study examines how retirement from professional sports is a specialized process in which athletes can experience many challenges and opportunities. The research examines professional athletes' retirement and the unique experiences that shape the post-career transition process (Alfermann & Stambulova, 2007). The study delves into the value of identity theory and the ways that identity plays an essential role in the transition process of professional athletes (Ergun, 2020). The research design focuses on interviews of professional athletes and organizations. The purpose of this phenomenological approach is to analyze professional athletes, emphasizing the necessity for professional athletes to have a strategic plan in place to prepare for a career after professional sports (Vilanova & Puig, 2016). Using professional ice hockey players as a sample, the research intends to gain insight into the complexity of sports-career transition experiences of professional athletes more generally. The current body of literature on professional athletes' career retirement is scant in studies of the career transition process generally and also in professional ice hockey. The researcher's purpose is to address this gap and the present study set out to examine both current and retired professional ice hockey players and their thoughts on the transition process, retirement, athletic identity, support groups, continuing education, and mentorships groups. The results of the study revealed both current and retired professional ice hockey players see the need for solid strategic planning early on in players' careers for the transition process to be successful. In particular, overall findings showed that all players interviewed agreed that robust mentorship programs would be beneficial to the transition process. These results may suggest that similar patterns may appear in other professional sports teams as players navigate the post-career transition.
