Women who want to be mothers or already are mothers working in front office positions of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Football League (NFL) are often absent in the sports literature, especially at the professional sports level. Provisions for organizations to provide resources and support to women who are mothers are not commonplace among professional sports teams, although institutional policies vary distinctly from team to team and individual league office policies. The purpose of this basic qualitative study is to add to a limited body of research on the lived experiences of women regarding motherhood. Specifically, the purpose is to understand how mothers' career choices are impacted in the culture of professional basketball and professional football through the leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships. The research adopted an exploratory approach by interviewing 29 working mothers through network sampling. The results indicate the theoretical intricacies of leader-member exchange relationships and show that impairment of the leader-member exchange relationship might result in a reassessment of the dyadic relationship between leaders and their subordinates (mothers), thus extending or conceivably breaking the exchange relationships. This study extends current knowledge on leader-member exchange relationships by providing a viewpoint on the leader-member exchange as it pertains to working mothers in the NBA and NFL. Findings support the LMX theory as a framework for enhancing mother experience outcomes in professional sport organizations.
