Meeting the needs of the whole child to achieve high expectations to maximize potential for college and career readiness is a crucial aspect in education today. Education reform through federal and state mandates have focused on increasing reading and math scores to close the achievement gap with limited success. Evidence has shown that an educational environment that is safe and supportive, provides social and emotional student support, and engages families and the community are more likely to improve educational outcomes. A collaborative whole child approach addresses academic performance, student behavior, physical health, cognitive skills and social emotional skills, and impacts motivation and learning. The data from this study showed an increase in mathematics achievement when students are engaged in more physical activity during the school day. The data also reinforced the need to meet the needs of the whole child to benefit their success.
