Previous studies on Albert Camus have mainly centered around the writer's contribution to the Existentialist movement, and on research of a cultural nature where the focus was biographical or based on Camus's political "engagement" vis-a-vis the Algerian conflict. Through a careful analysis of A Happy Death, this study will explore Camus's participation in a larger cultural evolution that was taking place during the period the work was conceived and beyond. The choice of A Happy Death, then, arises from a lack of critical attention given to this early work. The literary value of A Happy Death has long been in question due to the fact that Camus himself did not publish the manuscript and that it is often considered to be a rough draft of The Stranger. However, A Happy Death, through a uniqueness that must be shown, displays certain elements, such as the representation of space, that call for a cultural study. Furthermore, Michel de Certeau has carried out extensive research and publications on contemporary cultural criticism. De Certeau methodically considers every aspect of cultural development of the individual and the society through the analysis of activities, daily praxis, and language. The originality of Michel de Certeau lies in his observation and analysis of cultural details that have to do with everyday performances and practices. His study is extensive and comprises all aspects of culture. Among other works, Michel de Certeau's The Practice of Everyday Life reveals the significance, in all its facets, of the quotidian in its larger context of national and/or cultural identities. This work is particularly applicable to the study of A Happy Death where Camus attempts to redefine the very notion of happiness through his unconventional protagonist's modus vivendi. The application of Michel de Certeau's theory to such a work as A Happy Death makes this particular reading interesting because of the unique way in which the novel looks forward to later questions of cultural performance. In sum, the present study aims to unveil the "cultural" material in Albert Camus's work A Happy Death through Michel de Certeau's innovative theoretical framework.
