Scholars have recently begun to employ social network analysis (SNA) concepts and techniques to synthesize a novel, structural framework for studying the origins and effects of academic prestige. From this lens, the structure of academia is comprised of networks of individuals, institutions, and ideas. Academic prestige, in turn, is neither an actor attribute nor a reflection of merit. Instead, it is an emergent property of academic networks. Applications of this framework describe an 'academic caste system' (Burris 2004), in which the interdepartmental exchange of awarded doctorates in faculty exchange networks is understood to give rise to prestige and the highly stratified structure of academic employment. However, the relevance and utility of the framework remain largely untested outside the context of faculty exchange networks. Furthermore, the framework implicitly assumes that the origins and effects of prestige in faculty exchange networks operate in isolation from other dimensions of inequality like gender. Thus, at the individual level, it is unclear whether gender moderates the relationship between the prestige of the department where one's PhD was earned (doctoral prestige) and the prestige of one's employing department (employment prestige attainment). At the organizational level, it is unclear whether the structure of academic employment-and thus the prestige that university departments accumulate from their structural position within faculty exchange networks-vary according to the gender of the individuals exchanged. Accordingly, the aim of the first study for this dissertation is to test and expand the applicability and utility of the SNA framework beyond issues of academic employment. I accomplish this by demonstrating the framework's relevance and utility within the bounded context of a cooperation-driven, cross-organizational scientific collaboration network. The second and third studies aim to expand the framework's theoretical scope by providing a broader understanding of the interplay between gender, prestige, and the network origins of stratification and inequality in academia. I achieve this by demonstrating how the network origins and implications of department prestige are shaped by gender to stratify outcomes at the individual and organizational levels of the academic employment structure.
