The queer community underwent immense challenges and victories throughout the mid to late twentieth century. One of the avenues in which the community chronicled these challenges and victories was through independent newspapers, magazines, and other varying publications. My thesis essay examines how these publications acted as a beacon to help give the queer community in the Southern United States an avenue to communicate with one another, to broadcast queer voices, and to advertise queer friendly events, businesses, and organizations. These publications also provided the community with a vehicle in which to counter negative mainstream narratives about the queer community as well as make known a queer presence in southern communities. My thesis project, in collaboration with the Invisible History Project and their co-directors Joshua Burford and Maigen Sullivan, involved the creation of a foundational research document for a future exhibition titled, "The Alabama Queer Timeline." I went over fifteen years of issues of the queer publication, The Alabama Forum and highlighted headlines and events from those papers to help chronicle the events from Alabama's queer history. The research highlighted events that that took place in primarily in Birmingham associated with Pride, the bar scene, drag culture, the African American queer community, religion, politics, and sporting events among others.
