This study researched the theories which constitute emotionally focused couple therapy, or EFT. The purpose of the study was to expand and integrate the underlying theories, which include systemic, experiential, humanistic, existential, attachment, and emotion. Although Johnson, the primary author of EFT, cited theorists such as Minuchin, Perls, and Rogers as important contributors to these theories, this author expanded the study included other theorists critical to each theoretical approach. A central question to this study was whether or not a specific theory of emotion would enhance the overall theoretical EFT approach, thereby contributing to further research and practice of EFT in couple therapy. It was found that a specific theory of emotion yielded findings of existential emotions that were not found in a selected number of theories of emotion. These existential emotions were found to be critical to the EFT process in therapy.
