The purpose of this study was to explore selected personal, environmental, and activity characteristics among individuals who exercise. Members of facilities who agreed to participate in this study served as the subjects (N = 203). A Principal Components Factor Analysis was used to examine underlying dimensions in the 60 motives for exercise adherence. Based on the results, the investigator identified 11 motive factors for exercise with Intensity and Contentment receiving the highest ranking. Pearson correlations were computed for both the individual attributes and the 11 factors, and the three variables (1) Exercise at the Facility, (2) Exercise Outside the Facility, and (3) Total Exercise. Items related to the facility were negatively correlated with Exercise Outside the Facility. Exercise at the Facility correlated with Appearance, Health, Motivation, and Making Time to Exercise. Total Exercise had a negative correlation with Facility Hours, Travel Distance, and Fear of Future Health Problems and a positive correlation with Appearance. An analysis of the correlations between identified factors and exercise adherence revealed a positive relationship with Perception of Health and Appearance and the two variables, Exercise at the Facility and Total Exercise. A negative relationship was observed between (1) Climate and Exercise at the Facility, (2) Facility Accessibility and Exercise Outside the Facility and Total Exercise, and (3) Fear of Health Problems and Total Exercise. A stepwise multiple regression was incorporated to find if any attributes or factors could predict exercise adherence. Climate was identified as the best predictor for Exercise at the Facility. Facility Accessibility was the strongest predictor of Exercise Outside the Facility. Facility Accessibility was the only predictor for Total Exercise. A one-way analysis of variance and Scheffe Test were calculated to identify differences between low self-motivation/high exercise adherence and three other groups. The investigator found no common factors distinguishing that group completely from the other three groups.
