Cyberattacks have increasingly focused on the compromise of Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Additionally, such attacks compounded the problem of risk to data confidentiality, integrity, and availability because successful attacks inherently represented unauthorized acquisition of IoT systems. As IoT largely exists within the Web 3.0 paradigm, risk to data within an IoT ecosystem represents IAS risk in the Web 3.0 paradigm. Many successful botnet attacks resulted from three key factors: the proliferation of IoT, weak risk mitigation practices, and poor IoT security development. Prior studies attributed the proliferation of IoT increased risk to the assurance and security of information in the Web 3.0 paradigm. The current study determined if a relationship existed between IoT consumer awareness of information security, product acquisition, and age. Additionally, the study introduced data which supports the argument that, at some confidence level, a predictive relationship exists between consumer awareness of information security, age, and IoT acquisition behavior. Based on the results of the statistical analyses, there was no statistically significant relationship between security awareness, age, and IoT product acquisition for the sample population as a whole. However, data analysis also revealed pronounced differences in IoT acquisitions and ISA scores between different age groups. The dissimilarity in IoT acquisition behavior between the different age groups indicate future research is needed, with different parameters, to further study these topics and add to the gap in the literature.
