The questions Jacques Derrida raises about the efficacy of reading-and, above all, of reading the text-have taken on a fresh importance today, with the profession of literary criticism struggling to maintain itself as a fundamentally readerly discipline. In a way Derrida would not have liked, the elusiveness of the text tends to corroborate the apparent valuelessness of literary critical activity within an institutional framework that privileges self-evidence and predictable outcomes. And, in fact, this framework is so ubiquitous that one has a hard time properly parsing what it elides. My dissertation endeavors to do so in any case, beginning with an assessment of what Derrida develops as the difference of reading, the confronting division that extends from the way reading is sustained less by what can be read of the text than by what cannot be. It seems to me imperative that we examine how reading goes on before, or in the face of, the unreadable, and not only because the future of literary criticism and theory depends on it, but also because the same kind of obstacle is something like the prerequisite for any critical thinking whatsoever. I try to push Derrida's literary critical legacy in a direction other than that of an ethics of reading. Indeed, I read Derrida alongside Samuel Beckett, whose texts frequently demand a commitment to the task of reading, the going on or survival of reading, doing so in a way that goes hand in hand with the predicaments they actively explore. Beckett, I show, advances an underappreciated facet of Derrida's questions about reading and text, allowing us to see how the value of reading is tied to the immense, even debilitating, difficulty underlying our well-entrenched suspicions regarding it.
